Bernie Bierman was born and raised in Minnesota (Springfield, Litchfield, and Detroit Lakes), and is without doubt the most renowned big-time coach in the state's history. Known to his friends and admirers as the "Grey Eagle" because of his prematurely graying hair, Bernie Bierman would rise in the national coaching ranks in the 1930s and early 1940s when he led his Gopher state team to five NCAA championships--1934, 1935, 1936, 1940, 1941. As a youngster, he received a bone infection which led to crutches after several operations. He recovered and became a four-sport prep star, playing football, basketball, baseball, and track at Litchfield High School. At the University of Minnesota he played three sports and was captain of the unbeaten 1915 Gopher football team which took the Big 10 title. He played halfback and was an All Conference selection. Following college Bierman was a high school coach at the University of Montana before going into the military during World War I as a Marine. He returned and became an assistant coach at Tulane University, then head coach at Mississippi A & M before heading up the football program at Tulane. In 1932 he came to Minnesota to coach for 15 seasons with a hiatus of three years when he coached the Iowa Seahawks, a team composed primarily of future marine pilots during World War II. It was well-known that Bierman scoured the Minnesota hinterlands to find large, rawboned athletes to man the line. He found his backfields primarily among the twin city and suburban schools. His coaching methods were the antithesis of those of John Gagliardi at St. John's. He practiced his players six days a week unmercifully. His marine-styled tactics paid off as the period of 1932-1941 was called the "Golden Era" of Minnesota football. "Bernie was a task master, and you had to survive to play for him," said Bud Grant who played for him after WW II.
...
Said Bierman to Bob Lewis who had been a prep star halfback at St. Paul Central, "Kid, you'd get killed by them.
...
Bierman had forgotten that Lewis had been tackle fodder for the bruising linemen of the national champions for three years.
